Once again, Memphis was named to MovieMaker Magazine’s “Top 10 Big Cities for Filmmakers to Live and Work,” placing No. 7 on the annual list.

“How great to have this recognition as the No. 7 Movie City in the U.S. as our commission celebrates our 30th anniversary this year,” said Linn Sitler, commissioner of the Memphis & Shelby County Film and Television Commission. “Memphis is definitely film friendly, and always has been.”

The article highlights the city’s 81 film commission assisted projects that took place between July 2013 and June 2014, which shot a total of 299 days and generated 626 production jobs. 

“It’s one thing to shoot in a bustling, busy moviemaking city, and another to shoot in an environment of comparative intimacy,” wrote Ted Elrick, the article’s author.

Memphis is hailed as a haven for the bustling independent film scene, which simultaneously boasts fan-favorite and perennial Coolest Film Festival nominee, Indie Memphis.

In a recent article in The Commercial Appeal, Kelly Leow, deputy editor of MovieMaker Magazine, cited Memphis’ tight-knit film community and steadfast support of the local film commission as indicators of a city that is uniquely independent filmmaker friendly.

“As opposed to a big city like Los Angeles or New York, Memphis seems to have a smaller, tighter-knit community, with a film commission that supports every project that comes through, no matter how small,” Leow said.

Tennessee’s Blues City placed alongside others like Austin, New York City, Los Angeles and Atlanta.
