Knoxville, TN. FILM SCORE and the Scruffy City Film & Music Festival is poised to bring Knoxville an exciting week of film and music from April 28 - May 3, 2015. We are proud to announce our selection of films for our Feature Film Competition. The six films were chosen from over 380 submission from 30 countries. Filmmakers from four of these feature films will travel to Knoxville to support their projects and be available for a Q&A after their screening. 

The 2015 line-up of Official Submissions in the Feature Film category include:

EAST JERUSALEM/WEST JERUSALEM (Israel, Erez Miller and Henrique Cymerman, 80 minutes)

In early 2013, Israeli singer-songwriter David Broza arrives in predominantly Palestinian East Jerusalem with Grammy Award winner Steve Earle for an unprecedented project. Following his long-held dream to record songs with musicians from Palestine and Israel, Broza holds an eight-day session in the studio of Sabreen, the legendary Palestinian band. During the recordings Broza and the musicians find opportunities to share their life stories and learn surprising truths about each other. The experience offers an alternative to the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict: a story of musical bridge building, living together, and finding common ground. David Broza will be in attendance and a short Q&A with Mr. Broza will follow the film. 

DANNY SAYS (USA, Brendan Toller, 103 minutes)

In the 1970s, no one was closer to the heart of New York City’s punk rock explosion than the legendary Danny Fields. Beginning his career in Andy Warhol’s Factory scene (and working with The Velvet Underground), Fields went on to a role in management, taking on Iggy and the Stooges and The Ramones, launching their careers, and establishing them as icons. Danny Says is a portrait of Fields that basks in the music and mayhem of the era through the lens of Fields’ own acidic, often hilarious, and always entertaining point of view. Hot off the heels of his SXSW World Premiere, Director Brendan Toller will be in attendance and a short Q&A will follow the film.  

OUT OF NOTHING (USA, Chad DeRosa, 93 minutes) 

From the Pacific Northwest to the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, this film documents the inspiring true story of four tenacious men who risk everything to conquer the world records of motorcycle land speed racing. Their extraordinary journey, set to a soaring musical score, will remind you how perseverance against all odds can send the most unlikely men roaring into glory. The filmmakers and crew will be in attendance and a short Q&A will follow the film. 

MADE IN JAPAN (USA, Josh Bishop, 89 minutes)

This is the remarkable story of Tomi Fujiyama, the world’s first female Japanese country music star. Beginning her career by playing the USO circuit throughout Asia, Tomi’s career culminates in a 1964 performance at The Grand Ole Opry where she received the only standing ovation of the night. Forty years later, Tomi and her husband set out on a journey through Japan and across the United States to fulfill a dream of performing at The Opry one more time. A funny yet poignant multicultural journey through music, marriage, and the impact of the corporate world on the dreams of one woman. The film is narrated by Elijah Wood.

A FILM ABOUT KIDS AND MUSIC (Spain, Ramón Tort, 101 minutes)

Conducted by Joan Chamorro, Barcelona's Sant Andreu Jazz Band brings together children between 6 and 18 years old, around a classic jazz repertoire with lots of swing. The band's performances have sold out auditoriums in Spain and some of its members have gone on to careers as professional musicians. Like the best teachers, Chamorro's belief that any child can play music is an inspiration to his students and the results are remarkable. This film's characters will charm you, and the music is simply enchanting. A short Q&A will take place after the film via Skype.

BUTCH WALKER: OUT OF FOCUS (USA, Shane Valdés, Peter Harding, 84 minutes)

You may have heard of him, and you've definitely heard his work, but now find out about the real Butch Walker and his band the Black Widows as we take you on a personal journey inside one of the greatest minds in contemporary music. Co-Director Peter Harding will be in attendance and a short Q&A will follow this special out of competition screening.
